When our son was strapped in his car seat, looking out the window as a toddler, he would say “fries” upon seeing the golden arches on a big pole in the sky. It sounded more like “fwies”. And as the golden arches grew closer, he would say “fwies…fwies…fwies” until we drove past the arches and he’d cry “bye-bye fwies”. I loved those days. Occasionally we’d stop for him to have those “fwies” and not too far into the process he would get a death grip on a fry in each hand, while he chewed another. Those fries in his hands got nasty, and nobody wanted them, but he squeezed his “fwies” tight. With one fry in each hand he wasn’t able to grab more. His desire to hold on to the one or two fries kept him from experiencing all that was available to him.
So it is for us, too. In our relationship with CHRIST, we experience HIS blessing and we’re inclined to squeeze it like our little guy used to squeeze a fry. We’re prone to hold on too tight, and when we do we’re not open or available for more of what our FATHER has for us.
And yet, GOD has more. HE calls us to give up our current blessings, to hold them loosely, so HE can take us to a place of more. Not necessarily more materially, but more…abundant life. It makes sense if we embrace the truth that HIS ways and thoughts are higher than ours. Our experience with HIM is designed to be an incredible adventure. Consider Paul’s prayer for those in Ephesus:
I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope HE has given to those HE called--HIS holy people who are HIS rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God's power for us who believe HIM. This is the same mighty power that raised CHRIST from the dead and seated HIM in the place of honor at GOD's right hand in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 1:17-20 NLT)
There’s more! If we give up our lives and chase JESUS, we find true life (Mt. 10:39). This is a promise from JESUS. And we have the ability to experience the same power in our lives of the ONE who raised CHRIST from the dead. What’s so great about the mashed up fry, squeezed in between our fingers? I remember holding my son’s hand with both of my hands and prying the fry out, so he could have more. He may have cried, but all was forgotten when he received what else I had for him.
We face fear, wondering, worrying if we give up what we know and are comfortable with…what will happen to us, to those we love? We all face this. The times I have counted on GOD, in retrospect the leaps have felt more like steps, not nearly as big as I thought they were going to be. And I got to see GOD come through in my life.
“May you experience the love of CHRIST, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from GOD. Now all glory to GOD, who is able, through HIS mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”
(Ephesians 3:19-20 NLT)
GOD is able, and HE is at work within us! My prayer is that we would experience JESUS’ love and be willing to let go of whatever keeps us from experiencing more. And I am praying we will see HIM accomplish infinitely more…because there is more!
