The Light of the World

The Light of the World

"Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” (John 8:12 NLT)
Jesus is the Light of the World and when we follow Him, we no longer stumble in the darkness.  The Apostle John tells us Jesus' life brings light to everyone (John 1:4).  Jesus came to us in our darkness.
Darkness is defined as the absence of light. In the absence of the Light of the World, we have an Enemy that loves to lie to us, misrepresent the truth, steal, kill and destroy our lives (John 10:10).  You can see his handiwork all around us.  He assaults our marriages and tears our families apart.  The Evil One whispers a lack of contentment in our ears, telling us we could do better...even so far as to say that we deserve better.  He whispers lies about all the fun we should be having at the beginning of every addiction.  However, the Liar NEVER mentions the desperation, loneliness, helplessness and death waiting at the end of those paths.
Jesus, though, comes into our darkness just like light.  Without any prejudice or bias, He shines into all darkness, no matter how dark. When He walked the earth, He hung out with thieves and prostitutes, and let His light shine on them.  His Light transformed their lives and still transforms lives today.  Darkness lies to us, worries us, conceals things from us, but the Light of Jesus Christ illuminates our circumstances allowing our worries and fears to recede.
The Light of Christ shines in our lives, offering the warmth of a relationship with Him to the darkest, coldest corners of our being.  It's strange, but it takes us time to confess some of the darkness in our lives.  When we selfishly want to hold on to habits, pursuits or some part of this world that we live in, I think we miss how much Jesus is for us.  I think we need to consider what He offers us in contrast to what the evil one is offering.  Read these verses, and let the Light of Jesus Christ penetrate into your deepest fears and worries:
"So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:1 NLT)
"And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God." (Ephesians 3:18, 19 NLT)
"All who confess that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God." (1 John 4:15 NLT)
"Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us." (Romans 8:33, 34 NLT)
These are just a few verses with promises of what Jesus offers us.  The stand in such stark contrast to what the evil one offers.  My prayer for you, for my family and me is that we would take everything we consider or pursue to Jesus and ask Him be our Light, shining His truth in our lives.
