“The Lord hears His people when they call to Him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:17-18 NLT) Rescue. In the last few weeks, I have seen Jesus reach out and rescue a few of His loved ones. I have seen circumstances beyond natural, change. Coincidences…maybe, but His Word says when I believe, I see. So, I believe I have seen Him moving. In the life of a young missionary, in the life of a friend, in the lives of a young couple that just moved to Austin from West Texas. In all these circumstances, Jesus has reminded me how much He loves us. It has been sweet to watch Him step into these lives, tilting circumstances and rescuing the brokenhearted, those crushed in spirit.
With that recent perspective, I watched the free fall of Lance Armstrong this week. I read comments on FB, blogs and tweets. What I saw, read and watched left me thinking. I wonder what Jesus thinks when He sees Lance. We could argue about whether or not Lance is truly crushed in spirit or challenge his motives, but my opinion is I see a man who controlled all his circumstances, losing total control. Loss of income, lawsuits, broken family and working hard to stay out of prison appear to be his new reality. Like you, I bet, I have watched and wondered.
I think Jesus cares more for the soul of this man than He cares about his 7 Tour de France titles, his worldwide fame and even what he might accomplish in his battle against cancer. So, did Jesus say the following for you and me, you know – the good believers and faithful followers of His…or did He speak these words for Lance, too:
“The Jesus said, “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 NLT)
Weary and carrying heavy-burdens. Self-inflicted…yep, but still I saw a man who looked weary and is carrying heavy burdens. It made me think Jesus might be looking at him different than I was looking at him. My prayer is that in the midst of this free fall from fame and wealth, Lance would find rest in the only One who can give it.
