No Other Stream
The Lion answered this only by a look and a very low growl. And as Jill gazed at its motionless bulk, she realized that she might as well have asked the whole mountain to move aside for her convenience. The delicious rippling noise of the stream was driving her nearly frantic.
“Will you promise not to—do anything to me, if I do come?” said Jill. “I make no promise,” said the Lion.
Jill was so thirsty now that, without noticing it, she had come a step nearer.
“Do you eat little girls?” she said.
“I have swallowed up girls and boys, women and men, kings and emperors, cities and realms,” said the Lion. It didn’t say this as if it were boasting, nor as if it were sorry, nor as if it were angry. It just said it.
“I daren’t come and drink,” said Jill “Then you will die of thirst,” said the Lion. “Oh dear!” said Jill, coming another step nearer. “I suppose I must go and look for another stream then.” “There is no other stream,” said the Lion. (The Silver Chair by C. S. Lewis)
I read this exchange a few weeks ago in The Blue Book, and I can’t get the idea of it out of my head. Have I come to the stream, to satisfy my thirst with HIS water rather than other sources? Am I at HIS feet, surrendered to HIS authority? Do I really believe HE is the only source for satisfaction in my life…there is no other stream?
My friends Jimmy & Jeannie have given their lives to following JESUS, in a way that indicates they believe there is no other stream. In fact, the picture above is of their fireplace, in the center of their home.
They’re trusting GOD with their future, and with the future of their 3 children. They sold their home, put all of their belongings in a sea container and shipped it all to San Jose, Costa Rica.
Why would they risk comfort, safety and security? Because as they drew close to GOD, they sensed HE was asking them to go, to leave their comfortable places and follow HIM. When we say, JESUS is LORD; we imply we will follow if HE asks us to go.
And you know, being with them in the last week, seeing the beautiful place GOD has set them, reminded me, HE loves them and holds them in the palm of HIS hand. Their home in Costa Rica is wonderful, on a hill over San Jose, beautiful flowers around them, huge trees, and awesome views. Their sweet children are in a good school. They love the friends they’re meeting and the opportunity to share the love of CHRIST with new faces, in a new place.
Sure, life with a new language, a new country and developing new friendships is hard…but when we come to JESUS thirsty, knowing there is no other stream, HE does incredible things in our lives. Ephesians 3:20 promises when HE is at work, “HE accomplishes infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope.” Other translations say “exceedingly abundantly more.”
This is true for you and me, too. There is an adventure waiting at the stream! Though the world offers many choices, only one source truly satisfies. Come...drink, for there is no other stream.
