Keeping Company with GOD

Keeping Company with GOD

“Prayer is simply keeping company with GOD.” – Clement of Alexandria

“The one thing I ask of The LORD –

the thing I seek most –

is to live in the house of The LORD all the days of my life,

delighting in The LORD’s perfections and meditating in HIS Temple.” – Psalm 27:4 NLT

We talk about prayer all the time. We say things like:

“I’m praying for you!”…“Have you prayed about it?”...“Oh, I’ll pray for it to happen.”

Sometimes we pray, or say we’re praying because we’d like to, but we haven’t slowed down enough to do it. Lately, I have spent time in a devotional (Blue Book – bluebookstudy.com), thinking about topics like Prayer, Listening to GOD and GOD’s Voice. GOD is teaching me truths about who HE is, who I am and how we relate. I’ve thought new thoughts about how I pray.

“It wasn’t until much later in life that I began to see

that maybe my definition of prayer was far to small and rigid.

Prayer wasn’t so much about performing a duty

as it was about building a wonderfully intimate relationship.

Prayer was not simply throwing all the words I could muster at the unseen GOD,

But it – at its very core – has always been about union with The GOD who lives within us.”

-Jim Branch

Prayer isn’t just talking…it is also listening. Through HIS Word, our circumstances, and in silence - JESUS is speaks to us. HE promised to always be with us, to never forsake us, because HE desires this relationship with us.

“I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for HE is right beside me.” – Psalm 16:8 NLT

“I am convinced that The Voice that whispered us into being

still whispers within us and all creation.” – Robert Benson

As I have spent time in HIS Word, in silence, in talking with HIM, I’ve been changed. I see though I’m not perfected or complete by any means, I’m different. I may sit in silence or pour out my heart to GOD, then get up, forget what I heard, read or thought and race off into my day. Later I wonder, was anything accomplished in the first hour of my day?

“Why should I spend an hour in prayer when I do nothing during that time

but think of people I am angry with, people who are angry with me,

books I should read and books I should write, and

thousands of things that happen to grab my mind for a moment?

The answer is: because GOD is greater than my mind and my heart,

and what is happening in the house of prayer is not measureable

in terms of human success and failure.” – Henri J. M. Nouwen

I’ve concluded that no matter how busy I am, what things need to be done, there’s nothing more important in following CHRIST, than spending time with HIM, allowing HIM to transform me. HE is always at work, if I’ll give HIM time to move in me.

“I might think each hour is useless, but after thirty, sixty, or ninety such useless hours,

I gradually realize that I was not quite as alone as I thought;

A very small, gentile voice has been speaking to me far beyond my noisy place.

So: Be confident and trust in The LORD!” - Henri J. M. Nouwen

“And I am sure that GOD, who began the good work within you, will continue HIS work

until it is finally finished on that day when CHRIST JESUS comes back again.”

- Philippians 1:6 NLT
