HE came for us!
This Easter, as I consider what CHRIST did on the cross for us, I am more overwhelmed that HE would come at all. Consider where HE lived, and what HE initially invited us in to, so we could share in HIS intimate fellowship with HIS FATHER.
“Then GOD said, "Let us make people in our image, to be like ourselves. They will be masters over all life – the fish of the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the livestock, wild animals, and small animals. So GOD created people in HIS own image, GOD patterned them after HIMSELF; male and female HE created them.” (Genesis 1:26-27 NLT)
Paradise stood without sin. Only one command was given. The first words from the serpent challenged the authority of the MAKER, and then the serpent began to lie. And just like we do today, the woman began to consider the counsel of the evil one. Maybe she knew better, maybe she would be wise like GOD…the fruit looks good to my eye…
“The woman was convinced. The fruit looked so fresh and delicious, and it would make her so wise! So she ate some of the fruit. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her. Then, he ate it, too.”
(Genesis 3:6 NLT)
Paradise was lost. Death, sin, disease, strife, hunger, famine, anger, cursing, jealousy were all ushered in to our world. As is always the case, some of what the serpent said was true. Their eyes were opened. They saw what The LORD, their FATHER, had protected them from. In this defining moment, we learn the serpent is a liar, a twister of the truth, with no regard for our lives. He is the one who comes into every situation with intent to steal, kill and destroy the beautiful, abundant lives GOD so generously offers. We see in Eve our own struggle with pride, our own sense of knowing what is best, our real struggle with authority. Is JESUS our LORD, in every aspect of our lives, or are there some things should handle…maybe we know a little better or want them to go a certain way?
Into this world, into the place HE spoke to be for humans HE formed from the dust with HIS hands, comes JESUS. Leaving perfection, peace, joy, intimate fellowship with HIS FATHER to accept the most humble mission comes the AUTHOR of Love. JESUS didn’t come to conquer a nation or multiple nations to become some triumphant hero, but instead HE set HIS eyes on a cross.
HIS response to our sin was to come. After giving us everything and watching us squander it all, HE came. JESUS came on this mission for me, and HE came for you. Embrace JESUS this Easter.
“Though HE was GOD, HE did not demand or cling to HIS rights as GOD. HE made HIMSELF nothing; HE took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. And in human form HE obediently humbled HIMSELF even further by dying a criminal’s death on a cross. Because of this, GOD raised HIM up to the heights of heaven and gave HIM a name that is above every other name, so that at the name of JESUS every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue will confess that JESUS CHRIST is LORD, to the glory of GOD The FATHER.” (Philippians 2:6-11 NLT)
