"And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will." (Romans 8:26, 27 NLT)
Groanings. Groaning involves pain and suffering. To groan for someone implies you are close enough to know the deepest part of their need, that you hurt with them and for them. I re-read these verses recently and thought how awesome of God to dispatch His Spirit to help us. His Spirit, the same Spirit that raised Jesus Christ from the dead, is even more than with you. He is engaged to the point of groaning for you.
Recently, I had a real burden for one of my kids. I wanted so much for God to reveal something about Himself to them. I couldn't seem to accurately express my desire and then I ran into this promise. I was so relieved and encouraged to be reminded that the Holy Spirit knew what I wanted, groaned for me and the Father who knows my heart, knew exactly what His Spirit was saying.
How about you? Is there something in you that hurts or aches in the deepest part of who you are? Remember today that the Spirit of God is groaning for you, expressing your deepest needs to your Father. One of my deep desires is that we would have opportunities to share the truth of God's love with people who have no idea they have a Father who loves them this much!
