"And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel."(Matthew 2:6 KJV)
A few days ago, I ran across this verse. Later that morning, I was watching the news as I worked out. In the short 30 minutes I huffed and puffed, I saw reports on food shortages in Israel as a result of the current war in the Gaza Strip, civil war in Syria and a nasty political fight in Michigan between unions and those for making Michigan a right-to-work state. In just the last 2 years, we have seen Libya, Tunisia and Egypt topple their governments.
In the face of these wars and endless strife among our earthly governments, the promise of Christ ruling as our Governor is appealing. Isaiah's prophecy spoke of the nature of His rule:
"His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!" (Isaiah 9:7 NLT)
An unending rule of peace, fairness and justice sounds way different than what the governments of our world have delivered. While I look forward to the day Jesus will rule the government forever and ever, I am thankful He can rule my life right now.
Jesus came and freed us from sin and death by covering our sins with His sacrifice. He is able to be the Governor of our individual lives right now. Earthly rulers demand total devotion and I think our Heavenly Ruler deserves the same. As I give over my life to Him, allowing Him to rule over me, He provides the same peace, fairness and justice that He will provide someday when He rules over all. Only by surrendering today, I experience the benefits of His Rule right now.
