Glory in the Highest
“Glory to GOD in the highest, and on earth peace.” (Luke 2:14)
Christmas. Winter wonderland. A quaint, little town, covered in white. Holiday perfection! When we hear of JESUS as the Prince of Peace, and think of His Peace in our lives, we picture a snow globe scene. Me and mine, all tucked safely away in a place of quiet peace.
The source of peace is the Prince of Peace, but He didn’t come to establish a cheap snow globe scene. As I know Him more, I understand the price of peace is costly. Our Prince stood in the streets, where no religious elite would stand, with common hurting people. He reached out and actually touched a man whose body was white with leprosy. He knelt next to a woman caught in adultery and associated His name to hers. His own momma had her reputation ruined in her teenage years. Do you want His Peace? Then He asks us to lay down our lives pursuing the Glory of His Father…just like He did. He will even ask us to love our enemies.
“Higher than our own comfort, or success, or popularity, should be the one thought of the glory of our GOD. Let CHRIST be honored, loved, exalted, at whatever cost to us.”- F. B. Meyer
Loving my enemies seems impossible. In the wake of hatred displayed through Jihad, refugees coming in our country, questions about our police, and our politicians, the command seems unattainable. I can’t conjure up love for someone who spews hatred, tears others down or kills innocent people…can I? Yet, we’re commanded to take care of, pray for, and bless those who are opposed to us. This kind of love isn’t dependent on warm feelings to inspire action. If I wait for feelings, it won’t happen. It’s action first love.
Following JESUS, I’m called outside my comfort zone. He modeled this for us by giving up His comforts, rights and privileges for His Father’s purposes. And asked the same of us.
"If any of you wants to be My follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow Me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for My sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.” (Mark 8:34-35 NLT)
What if GOD is orchestrating all this movement of refugees so people who had no chance to hear of JESUS and His love for them can now hear it…and come to know Him? When we step in and love those He places in our paths, we find true life. We see lives change. We experience freshness in time with our Father as we share His passion for others. Our sights fix on the realities of heaven and the cares of this world grow dim.
Friends, we live in the richest nation that has ever existed. Our world has a lot to offer us, but let’s not settle for a false, snow globe kind of peace. True peace is only found in following the Prince of Peace. We experience it most when we seek His Glory above all else
“Live to please GOD, an HE will breathe on thee His peace. Seek His Glory, and He will make thy heart His home. Do His will, and thereby good shall come to thee.” – F. B. Meyer
