As a child, I went to school with a guy named Christie. His family lived just off of Barton Springs Road, over by Zilker Park. I loved being dropped at his house, or at his dad’s restaurant on Town Lake (Christie’s was on the current site of the Hyatt). We would catch fish and the cooks would fry up what we caught. Time at Christie’s house or his dad’s restaurant was always an adventure. One of our adventures was to ride bikes through his neighborhood. We stopped by an old man’s house with this huge private garden filled with sculptures. In hindsight, I believe his neighbor was Charles Umlauf, the famous sculptor. I’m not positive, but I can’t imagine there’s another sculptor who lived in a garden-like setting off Barton Springs. I had no idea we were in the presence of greatness. We would ride up to his house, Christie would drop his bike and walk right in. He showed me around Umlauf’s garden, which was private property in the 70s, like he owned the place. I remember seeing Mr. Umlauf, and being surprised he wasn’t angry with us, but more amused, almost pleased we had an interest in walking around his garden. I can only imagine what great critiques two clueless kids offered as he showed us “a bunch of statues.” But, Christie was his neighbor and Mr. Umlauf gave him full access to his garden and artwork. He granted us the freedom to enjoy all he had made.

Just like Mr. Umlauf granted us access to the garden, all of those who have believed in Jesus have been granted access to His Father.

“we can boldly enter heaven's Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new & life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place…let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him...” – Hebrews 10:19-22

What advantages are there for us, with this incredible access? We can go into His Presence, and experience total freedom. Freedom to be ourselves, known and accepted, made pure and holy by His incredible mercy. We can trust, not in what we have done, but what He has done. Though we were separated from Him by our sins, He gave us life and everything He has, has been given to us.

“But God is so rich in mercy, & He loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, He gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God's grace that you have been saved!)For He raised us from the dead along with Christ & seated us with Him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.” – Ephesians 2:4-6

As undeserving as we are, we have been given the right to be His children.

“to all who believed Him & accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God.” – Jn.1:12

Mr. Umlauf gave Christie access to his private garden, but with GOD it’s like you and I have been given the garden. Even more, we’re offered the opportunity to join Him in what He is doing. 1 Corinthians 3 tells us we are, together as His children, co-laborers in His Kingdom. 2 Corinthians 5 says we’re His ambassadors. This is why He made us, and all of Creation, that we might be with Him, and walk with Him and work with Him.

Knowing we have access, permission to go into the presence of The Most High God, transforms ordinary days to extraordinary days. By His grace, we have become His children, welcomed in and made to participate with Him in His work. Enjoy your access!
